All the world’s a stage…
RCP’s Shakespeare Players are excited to announce auditions for our twentieth anniversary production of Free Shakespeare at Highland Bowl: As You Like It, directed by Maria Scipione. Shakespeare’s witty comedy subverts the rules of gender and romance. Set against the musical backdrop of Woodstock, this production of As You Like It will find the power of freedom, love, and rebellion.
Auditions will take place at 7pm on April 6 and 7 at the Harley School; call-backs, if needed, will be April 8 at 2pm. At the auditions, actors should be prepared to deliver a monologue of their choice, perform a cold reading, and participate in movement and improvisation exercises. Let us know if you have musical talent you want to share too! All ages are welcome to audition, though some roles specifically call for teen-age or young-20s actors. Casting will be color-blind and, in some cases, gender blind.
Rehearsals will start in mid-May; performances will be five nights a week, July 14–29. Most rehearsals will be 7–10pm on weeknights. Please share all your evening and weekend conflicts for May 15 through July 30.
Producers and a tech team are also being recruited for this highly visible summer Shakespeare experience, expected to draw several thousand people to the Highland Bowl during the 12-performance run.

The play goes back and forth between the regimented court of Duke Frederick and the Forest of Arden, where freedom provides relief from fraternal conflicts. According to Essential Shakespeare Handbook, “Inhabited by shepherds, the forest becomes a rural counter-court for a group of exiles from the duke’s palace. In this natural setting, the exiles make peace with the world they have left behind, and discover themselves anew.”
