Apply to Direct

The Shakespeare Players are now accepting applications to direct in our 2018 season.

We are planning two full length productions: a “blockbuster” production for free Shakespeare at Highland Bowl in July, and an innovative, site-specific production for the fall (Oct–Nov, or you may propose a production and timeline suitable for the 2018 Fringe Festival).

This year we are inviting directors to select which of Shakespeare’s plays they want to direct. Please keep our recent production history in mind; if you are applying to direct at the Bowl, please do not propose a play we have produced at the Bowl in the past five years (As You Like It; Romeo and Juliet; Henry IV, parts 1 and 2; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Twelfth Night).

If you would like to submit an application to direct a show next season, you will need:

  1. A Resume of your theatrical directing experience
  2. A 500–1000 word summation of  your directorial vision
Clearly identify which play you want to direct and why? Why is this play appropriate for this venue?
    • For the summer show, describe how you will accommodate the opportunities and challenges of an outdoor venue.
    • For the fall production, please identify/describe the venue in which you want to stage the play.
  3. Any specific design elements you wish to employ
  4. Any production staff you would like to work with
    • Have you confirmed the availability of the staff?
    • Will you require any specialized staff (e.g., fight or dance choreographer, dialect or movement coach)?
  5. A rough outline of your production/rehearsal timeline
  6. A rough budget (if possible)

Please submit your materials as one packet, in either .pdf or .docx format using the form below or by emailing AND

Proposals for both the summer and fall productions are due Friday, September 29. Interviews are scheduled for Saturday, October 7. Please email if you would like to arrange an interview on an alternate date.
